Get to know more about Modern Minimalist Architectural Home Design
In modern minimalist architectural design, architecture or building design uses only the most basic needs. Minimalism in architecture emphasizes things that are essential and functional. Geometric shapes and without decoration become minimalist architectural characters.
Minimalism itself became a trend in the early 19th century and became an important movement due to the response from previous architectural styles that used more elements of decoration and ornaments. Minimalist home architectural design designers focus on two elements, namely elegant lighting and empty space created by the reduction of three-dimensional elements in architectural design.
In London and New York, modern minimalist home architectural designs became popular in the late 1980s. Architects and fashion designers try to create the concept of simplicity by using white elements, lighting that seems cool, large spaces with minimal objects and furniture. Architects Ludwid Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier are the two architects who have the greatest influence on the element of simplicity in the dynamics of minimalist architecture.
Minimalist architects not only consider the physical quality of buildings, they also look deeply into an invisible spiritual dimension, with more attention to details, people, space, nature, and materials. They found that something abstract and not visible like natural light, heaven, earth, and air actually had qualities.
In a minimalist modern home architecture design, design is used to convey a message of simplicity. The basic geometric shapes, the absence of decoration, the use of simple materials and the repetition of structures are characteristic of minimalism. Natural lighting makes the building look simple and clean. Minimalist architects have the motto “listen to figure”, by searching for the essence of simplicity by rediscovering valuable qualities in simple and common materials.
The main characteristics of simple modern minimalist architecture are, among others, the shape of a square plan, the shape of a cube building, a row of windows that stretch with a checkered horizon, all 90-degree façade angles, and using fabricated materials such as steel, glass and concrete.
The idea of simplicity actually emerged in various cultures, especially in Japan with Zen culture. The Japanese manipulate Zen culture into the aesthetics and design of their buildings. This idea of Japanese architecture influenced Western culture, especially America since the mid-18th century, and also inspired the appearance of minimalist architecture in the 19th century.
The concept of Zen simplicity talks a lot about the idea of freedom and the essence of life. Simplicity is not only seen from its aesthetic value, but also from the moral perception of objects and materials. Like the sand garden at Ryoanji Temple above which shows the concept of simplicity with the arrangement of several stones and a large empty space.
Another Japanese aesthetic principle, Ma, refers to empty and open space. This concept removes all unnecessary internal walls and opens the space between interior and exterior. Frank Lloyd Wright was inspired by sliding doors in Japan that allow exterior elements to enter the interior of the room.
One of the buildings with a famous minimalist style is Farnsworth House. Farnsworth House is a private house owned by Dr. Edith Farnsworth who is a kidney disease expert. This house, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Hohe, is said to be the most important work of 20th century architecture. The house, which has only one room, is designed using steel and glass. Now this house is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is used as a museum.
Another example of a minimalist style house is The Glass Pavilion. This house is touted as the most minimalist house ever designed (Source: architecturebeast.com). The house, located in California, was designed by a Los Angeles architect named Steve Hermann. Initially this house was made for the architect’s private home, but later it was sold at a fantastic price of 30 million dollars.
